Spare change adds up, and this summer it made a real difference. Medina Electric Cooperative’s Operation Round Up program awarded two non-profit organizations a total of $8,000 to help residents in Uvalde and the surrounding areas.

Medina EC’s ORU committee awarded $5,000 to Kate Marmion Rides to Radiation and $3,000 to the Anderson House.

Kate Marmion Rides for Radiation provides 100% donor supported transportation to qualifying radiation therapy patients of the Kate Marmion Regional Cancer Center. The program serves patients in seven of Medina EC’s 17 counties, including Dimmit, Edwards, Kinney, Medina, Real, Uvalde and Zavala counties. The donation for ORU will be used to purchase a new van to help with the transportation of patients.

Anderson House helps families in the Uvalde and Carrizo Springs area who are affected by an unplanned pregnancy.  The organization offers free services to those who have experienced sexually related trauma which includes sexual abuse/assault, miscarriage, abortion, unwanted pregnancy, and STDs/STIs. Anderson House also offers educational classes for families and clothing and baby supplies for new mothers. The donation from the ORU committee will go towards the purchase of a used mobile ultrasound unit.

Medina EC’s Operation Round Up program is funded by members of the cooperative who round up their monthly electric bills to the next whole dollar, employees who give through payroll deduction, and other one-time donations. The fund is managed by the Operation Round Up Trust Committee and is awarded quarterly to individuals and organizations in need across our 17-county service territory.

Applicants do not need to be members of Medina EC but must reside in one of the 17 counties served by the cooperative. Applicants must include a letter of why the donation is needed. The next application deadline is November 1. For more information and to apply online, visit MedinaEC.org/ORU.
