Youth Tour

Youth Tour

The Trip of a Lifetime!

Each June, Medina EC sends students on the Government-in-Action Youth Tour, aka "the trip of a lifetime!"

More than 1,500 students from across the country, almost 150 of those being from Texas, take the one week trip to Washington, D.C. Texas students start their trip in Austin to tour the State Capitol before heading to our nation's capital. While in D.C., they will visit museums, Capitol Hill with congressional representatives, Arlington National Cemetery, see a performance at the Kennedy Center, take a Potomac River Dinner Boat Cruise and so much more!

2021 Youth Tour - $500 College Scholarship Available!

Like many things lately, the 2021 Youth Tour contest will look a little different. Winners were originally set to receive an all-expense paid trip to Austin, Texas, and Washington, D.C. from June 13-22, 2021, as they have in past years, and $500 scholarship to be used in college. However, in mid-December the difficult decision was made to cancel the 2021 Youth Tour Trip.

We will still select 3 winners, and each winner will get a $500 college scholarship. Winners will also attend a Youth Tour day, where they will learn more about their cooperative, have the chance to visit with staff and lawmakers, and be presented with their scholarship.

Applications were due January 8. Please check back in September to apply for the 2022 Youth Tour Trip.

If you have questions, contact us at YouthTour@MedinaEC.org.

How do I apply?

The application for the 2021 Youth Tour is closed. The application for 2022 will be up in September of 2021.

Who is eligible?

High school sophomores and juniors whose parent or legal guardian is a member of Medina EC are eligible for the trip.

How much does it cost?

FREE!

Medina EC pays for all travel expenses including airfare, hotel and food. However, most students like to bring additional money for spending on souvenirs.

Why should I apply?

Not only is this a great resumé builder, you will meet new friends, learn how our government works, and more. Medina EC's Youth Tour participants also receive $500 scholarships when they graduate from high school!

How are winners picked?

The entries will be scored by an independent judge.

One student from each of the three voting districts will receive this trip and scholarship. If an application that meets eligibility is not received from one of the voting districts, then the next highest scoring student from one of the other voting districts will receive the trip.

Medina EC reserves the right to select another contestant for the Youth Tour trip if a winner is found to be a poor representative of the program and the cooperative.

2020 Winners

Luke Lessing, Hondo

If I have the opportunity to meet one of our federal or state legislators, I would like to ask him/her, “How can our government leaders promote and encourage open-mindedness and effective communication between members of different political parties?”

Johnny Muniz, D'Hanis

If I was given the opportunity to speak with a state or federal legislature the first two questions that I would ask would be why did they choose their political party and what influences them in what they fight for or the decisions they make.

Presley Rodriguez, Pearsall

While I agree content should be monitored online, I feel there has to be an alternative that doesn’t restrict all users who in some cases make a living with their content, or like me, gain useful knowledge from comments people make on videos. This is why I would ask a legislator are there better ways for YouTubers to comply with the COPPA law while still possessing the ability to create appropriate content without the added burden of limits and boundaries?
