Medina Electric Cooperative held its 85th Annual Membership Meeting on Saturday, September 28, 2024, and welcomed over 220 attendees at the Herby Ham Activity Center in Uvalde, Texas. Members enjoyed a pancake breakfast, fellowship with members and meeting with employees and board members. Many members also participated in a book drive to donate books to local libraries in Medina EC’s service area.
The meeting included a year in review video highlighting key projects at the cooperative and a feature on local linemen who helped electrify a small community in Guatemala. Additionally, election results were announced and many members walked away with door prizes, including the $1,000 grand prize.
The employees and board of directors of Medina EC extend their thanks to all who attended. CEO Trey Grebe mentioned the importance of participating the cooperative process including voting in the director election and attending the annual membership meeting.
Board President Kenneth White and Director Wayne Sholtz were both recognized for their years of service at the cooperative, as they did not seek re-election. White has served on the board since 2009 and Sholtz was elected in 2012.
This year, only Voting District 1 had a contested race. The election was open from August 20 through September 20. The results of the election were announced at the cooperative’s meeting. The results were as follows:
• Michael “Mickey” Allen Holzhaus – 1,468 votes
• Welquis R. Lopez, Sr. – 577 votes
During the nomination period of the 2024 election, incumbent director from Voting District 3—Mr. J.L. Gonzalez of Laredo—ran unopposed. In Voting District 2, only one member ran for the open seat—Mr. James Crawford of Uvalde. Per the bylaws, Mr. Gonzalez and Mr. Crawford were automatically reelected and elected, respectively, by the certification committee at the April board meeting.
After the meeting concluded, members were encouraged to watch the live line safety demonstration to learn more about electrical safety. Planning for the 86th Annual Membership Meeting has already begun and will be in one of the Voting District 3 counties. To learn more about Medina Electric Cooperative, visit MedinaEC.org.
